About Us

Debs and her husband Darrin had lived in the Cardrona Valley longer than any -where else in New Zealand… this was their home.

However they began to realise that the dream of being “the last house on a gravel road” had disappeared when the Crown Range was sealed in the year 2000.

Massive development was soon to follow.

To again find their piece of paradise, they purchased an amazing property in the Hidden Valley, Earnscleugh.

The stunning Earnscleugh Station, surrounds Backcountry Saddle Expeditions, and played  a huge part in providing for the then gold miners. The Station history is part of your riding experience as you explore this exciting area.

It is situated 10 mins from Clyde and 10 mins from Alexandra… both off Earnscleugh Road.

It had everything Cardrona had to offer and heaps more…

Back in the late 1800s this area was home to thousands of gold miners and even now the ruins of their accommodation and mine workings abound.

Clyde showcases some of Central Otago’s finest historical buildings including The Post Office, Oliver’s and Dunstan House to name a few. It would be one of New Zealand’s best examples of a Central Otago gold-mining town.

The start or finish of the Central Otago Rail-trail makes Clyde a very popular destination for bike enthusiasts from both New Zealand and around the World. It would be considered the “Bike Hub” with some exceptional trails starting or finishing in this area.

It also has international status as it was the location for the filming of the famous Chinese film called “Only Cloud Knows” directed by Xiaongang Feng and, in true Central Otago style, Clyde embraced the minor disruption to their sleepy town status.

Backcountry Saddle Expeditions invite you to experience their continued passion for horse trekking. Come and check out  their “new dream” and the thrill of a horse ride  on their stunning Appaloosas.
